The High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) is a type of Safety Instrumented System (SIS) designed to prevent the over-pressurization of a plant, pipeline, or vessel by automatically and rapidly shutting off the source of the high pressure.

In the oil, gas, and chemical industries, HIPPS acts as a reliable barrier between a high-pressure section and a low-pressure, downstream section of an installation. It provides an alternative to traditional pressure relief systems (like pressure relief valves that vent to a flare), offering significant environmental and economic advantages by containing the fluid and allowing for lower design pressure ratings for downstream equipment.
